Hi!My name is Stefan, I’m 37 years old living in Stockholm (the capital of Sweden). I’ve been treated from leukemia since May of 2007. My blog is in Swedish but below you can se my summary.

End of May:I get the bad news that I have leukemia. I went to my doctor with a sore throat and fever. So instead of going home i was placed in the hospital with AML05.

First cemotherapy:Division B15, my first cemotherapy and complications following like pneumonia, water around the heart and high fever. I was in institutional care for three weeks in a row. A very tough time, but 4 days at home feeling well. I got total remission = no cancer = Yipee!!

Second:The struggle against infections is here to come, continuing with 2 more rounds of cemo to be on the safe side even though the cancer is gone (consolidation), since there is no way to mesure cancer levels down to a single cell. Doing better, this second time around, only in the hospital for one week because of pneumonia, which i didn´t sense, there was only the fever.

 Third:
This third treetment is a day shorter but tough anyway. This time i feel naucous/ill immediately by the first bag of cemo. Erlier it had taken two days. I end up at the hospital whithin a week. Pneumonia again and a whole week in bed, feever is up to 39,5 and i´m dog tired for a day or two. I take the decision to undergo a bonemarrow transplantation. To diminish the risks of relaps. It´s hard with numbers but the assessement is that my relaps risks are 60-65% without bonemarrow, and with it around 30%. An easy choice for me who want optimal chanses of cure.

Bone marrow transplant:The 11/9 I started a cemo treatment again only to be able to get the transplant on 21/9. I was selected by lottery to a reduced course of cemo, and it was presumably ten times easyer than the previous rounds. I was now att Huddinge hospital, div B87 instead of KS in Solna since they don´t do bonemarrowtransplants there. I was feeling fine upuntil the 21/9. Non institutional care the first few weeks after the transplant, amazing to actually be let off hospital grounds. Since then I have gone 2 days/week for check up´s. So far everything has gone well and all my tests have been fine.

The six month checkup

This is the most imortant bone marrow checkup. Here 97 % of all relapse occurr. Mine looked great and Im now 100 % donator.
Im feeling great and Im working 75 % and will soon go up to 100%. The only thing I have to be carefull about is the sun otherwise Im free to do anything :-)

9 months after transplant
I am feeling fine, still working 75% even though i work alot of overtime the insurance place has not been complaining. I have the energy to do what i did before i got sick and im even gonna start up my spinning classes again (at SATS) which is a milestone for me. The only thing i imagine to be different than before is when i have a hard day at work and get a little bit more tired than before. But i am calm, the disease is in the back of my head but not at all like in the early stages. I probably pause (at least) once a day to realize and become totally happy about the fact that i can spend a few more days on earth.

12 months after transplant
Still fine, now working 100% at my regular job. I even have more responsibilitys than before. I get hints around 15:00 that im getting tired but it dosent bother me at all. I keep 3 spinning classes/week and the belly i succeeded to build within the year is hopfully disappearing, thow its a slow process. My hair is no longer curly, its straight like before. The colour is getting lighter as well. Many days can pass without me thinking about the disease and thats a bliss but i still pause to smile about my ”earth spending days”. I am carefully starting to plan ahead, in timeframes of more than a month.

18 months after transplant
It continues to look good for me. My check ups are now only every third month. Im becoming my German donor pretty fast. Spinning twice a week, 100% work. Im still to be a bit cautious in the sun hence skin sensability (not more than others maby?!) AND i am planing 6 months ahead (!) in total harmony cuz im going to stick around :)
